Wooden Pillars in South Indian Homes ~ Pinterest Inspiration
The Whimsical Interiors
Wooden Pillars play a crucial role in house architecture especially in South India. Pillars used to be strong supportive system in olden days home designs. Ancient houses in our rayalaseema region use hundreds of pillars. My husband’s 130 old house had 160 pillars. And they were sold for a good price after demolishing the house.
Pillars can be considered nostalgic home architecture which remind us of our grand parents houses in villages. During childhood in my father’s village, I remember roaming in the house between those pillars especially while entering the kitchen.
Indian house architecture and needs of people have completely changed during the course of time and pillars are vanishing from Indian home architecture and cement pillars are used for strong support.
But some creative interior designers are using these wooden pillars in their designs. They are using them in foyer areas, as room dividers, near kitchen and what not.
Showcasing few traditional style wooden pillar inspiring pictures from Pinterest for design inspiration and ideas.
Below picture from Pinterest depicts how pillars are used at the house entrance. This is age old indian style where every house used to have pillars and “arugu” (cement benches to sit and socialize) at the entrance of the house.
